How I Became a Naturalist

who I am

I'm an independent artist, collector, and lover of natural history.

Through my academic background in the History of Science, I have explored the ways people have observed, recorded, and interacted with nature through time. I make art to explore these themes.

My first degree was in Palaeontology at Indiana University. As a part time job, I worked in several labs on campus handling fossils and bones, and learned proper collection techniques. I spent my weekends exploring and Fossil hunting around southern Indiana.

My second degree is what brought me to Manchester. I studied the History of Science, with a special focus in the History of the field of Natural History. My master's thesis covered how taxidermy's usage and meaning has changed over time in museum galleries.

While I'm no longer 'in academia', I take it upon myself to keep learning each day. There is always more to know about the natural world.

Creating art has been a way for me to connect with nature. I found that I could keep a nature journal as a way of encouraging myself to keep learning about the world around me. I would take it on walks, make quick sketches, and allow myself to let my curious mind wander.

I've taken courses and attended workshops on the art of scientific illustrations, and while I am heavily influenced by scientific illustrations in my work, the truth is . . . I love messy art.

what I'm up to now

I spend my days hanging out with my two cats, Freya and Flora, in our little garden. Sometimes we take them on pram walks to the local park. I also volunteer at the Portico Library, where I work with old books and occasionally take part in fun book talks! When I have the time, I like to visit museums and other inspiring sites across the UK and Europe to collect inspiration for future projects!

I create handmade artwork and curate thoughtfully chosen antique books, illustrations, and curiosities that encourage people to look more closely at nature and the remarkable ways it has been studied, recorded, and appreciated over time. My shop is still growing, as am I! Who knows what I'll get up to next.
